Queens Park Community School London & Kayamandi High School Stellenbosch

Since 2012, a global link has developed between QPCS and Kayamandi High School, Stellenbosch in South Africa. This was initially as part of the British Council Global Schools project.

A locally rooted partnership

The project grew from a natural extension of QPCS’s links with the Lexi Cinema a few hundred metres away in Kensal Rise. The Lexi supports the Lynedoch Farming Community in Stellenbosch.

Lynedoch is very close to Kayamandi, a large township on the outskirts of Stellenbosch in the Western Cape. The schools have become formally linked, and the project has grown sustainably for 6 years. The partnership focuses on teaching and learning in the classrooms of the Kayamandi High School, and global connections for young people of school age.

Sharing good practice in delivering a High School curriculum in English is a focus for the QPCS-Kayamandi exchange

Overcoming disadvantage

Kayamandi's students work exceptionally hard at school, yet struggle with challenges such as poor housing in the Township, and lack of access to opportunities for employment and further study.  The exchange with QPCS sixth form students, who have three times made the journey to Kayamandi, is designed to help young people on both sides of this link to build awareness and confidence.

QPCS students undertake volunteering roles at Kayamandi High School. Staying in the township community offers a shared and an enriching experience for the young people of both schools.

QPCS has also welcomed back to the UK several teachers from Kayamandi on three separate visits. These UK stays achieved their objective of improving pedagogy and sharing good practise in teaching.
